TheBishop of Chelmsfordhas urged the Government to repay its £400-million debt to Iran and take immediate action to secure the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from imprisonment in the country.

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was jailed in Iran five years ago charged with  crimes including plotting the overthrow of the Iranian government, lost her appeal against a second prison sentence and was ordered to return to prison for another year, with a further year of a travel ban. She has been in jail and then house arrest since 2016. Her physical and mental health continues to decline.

The dispute over the arms debt dates back to the 1970s, when the Shah of Iran paid the UK £400 million for 1,500 Chieftain tanks and 250 other armoured vehicles. The UKrefused to deliver the tanksafter his overthrow in 1979.
